come on, people…eat!
While I was at the gym this morning a young girl next to me passed out in the middle of her workout…just dropped! It was so scary! Her eyes rolled back, her body went limp…I had never seen someone just pass out like that. A trainer ran to her side while another person called 911. She ended up being ok, thank God, but turns out she hadn’t eaten anything since dinner last night; so in combination with working out, no fuel and more than likely being dehydrated, it all worked against her and she just fainted. Really, I’m glad she ended up being ok.
With that said, I’m here to yell at you to…GIVE YOUR BODY THE FUEL IT NEEDS!
Our bodies are smart…a lot smarter than we give them credit for. It knows what it needs, and learning to listen to it and read it’s signals is key. I know there’s so much debate about whether it’s “good” or “bad” to eat before a workout, and I know you can easily find references to back your opinion-wich ever way you lean. But working out on a completely empty stomach, with no energy(calories/food) whatsoever to fuel your body is just asking for disaster, in my opinion. I’m not saying to gorge yourself before you hit the gym, absolutely not. But you’ve got to have something to fuel your workout…unless you’re doing low-intensity, steady state work, where your body doesn’t need too much to help you through the workout, you’ll more than likely be just fine. But some studies have shown that not having anything in your stomach before a workout actually works against you by depleting your muscle of protein! This is bad news bears! Protein is vital for health, repair and growth! Also, without having the fuel your body needs, you’re really setting the workout bar low…without the proper fuel, you can’t reach your max intensity level. And intensity should be an important factor to you.
Give your body some fuel an hour and half to two hours before your workout and you’ll be set. Don’t disrespect your body..give it what it needs.
